In a decision that will benefit about 60 lakh people in poll-bound Delhi, Union Cabinet today approved an Ordinance to regularise 895 unauthorised colonies which have come up till June 1 this year.
Urban Development Ministry officials said with this decision, the total number of colonies eligible for regularisation would be 1939 as the process to regularise colonies is already underway.
"The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, today approved amendment to the existing guidelines that enables regularization of all unauthorized colonies that have come up till June 1, 2014 namely extension of cut-off date for regularization from March 31, 2002 to June 1, 2014," an official statement said.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, while briefing on Cabinet meeting, said "The Ordinance is for regularisation of unauthorised colonies in Delhi."
The impact of the Ordinance on Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Amendment Bill, 2014 will be that "895 colonies will get benefitted and 60 lakh people living there will also get benefitted", Jaitley said.
The detailed implementation and guidelines will be issued by the concerned authorities. With their regularisation, infrastructure and other facilities will continue to be provided, Jaitley said.
Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu told Parliament last week that the government was moving towards regularisation of unauthorised colonies where people already have been getting electricity, water and other things.
"But on record, they are unauthorised... They cannot transfer their properties also," he had said.
