Maharashtra Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao today asked Vice Chancellors to take "exemplary" action against professional colleges lacking basic infrastructure and qualified faculty.
He was addressing VCs of non-agricultural public universities at the Annual Meet at Sahyadri Guest House here.
Rao also asked the Maharashtra government to take necessary steps for early enactment of the proposed Maharashtra Public Universities' Act and implementation of recommendations of the three committees headed by Anil Kakodkar, Arun Nigwekar and Ram Takawle regarding bifurcation as well as reforms in higher education.
Observing that Indian scholars hold prestigious teaching positions in universities abroad, the Governor asked state universities to invite them as visiting faculty to teach in Maharashtra.
Speaking to an audience which included Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Higher and Technical Education Minister Vinod Tawde, Chief Secretary Swadhin Kshatriya and secretaries of various departments, the Governor also appealed to Vice Chancellors to take up a 'Study in Maharashtra' campaign to attract students from across the world.
He called for promotion of 'Teach in Maharashtra' and 'Study in Maharashtra' campaigns, setting a time frame to introduce a Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) in universities, speeding up implementation of examination reforms by universities, setting up a Maharashtra Universities Service Commission and involving universities in the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
Mentioning that the Union Human Resources Department Minister has urged universities to implement CBCS from the forthcoming year, the Maharashtra Governor called for setting a timeframe for universities to comply with CBCS guidelines.
