M Gopal Reddy, a 1985-batch officer, was prematurely repatriated to his cadre following a decision of the Appointment Committee of Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, official sources said.
No reason was given in the order relieving Reddy from the Home Ministry with immediate effect.
Reddy was looking after several key divisions of the Home Ministry, including Union Territories, Police Modernisation besides other.
Speculation is rife in the Home Ministry about the officer's sudden repatriation but it is not known immediately the actual reasons for his departure from the sensitive Ministry, sources said.
