Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation today collected samples of bread from various bakery units in the city and sent them to a laboratory to find if they contain any hazardous chemicals.
This follows release of a study by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) which says that 84 per cent of 38 bread brands commonly sold in Delhi were found to contain hazardous chemicals.
"We collected 18 samples of bread which have been sent to our laboratory to check if they contain cancer-causing chemicals," said the additional medical officer of AMC Bhavin Joshi.
More samples will be collected from shops in the city and tested, he added.
A CSE report, released on May 23, said that 84 per cent of 38 commonly available brands of pre-packaged breads, including pav and buns in Delhi tested positive for potassium bromate and potassium iodate, banned in many countries for being hazardous to the health.
After the report was released, Union Health Minister J P Nadda said he had directed the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to submit a report in this regard.
