"I thank Jaitley on behalf of the people of Amritsar for this step which should help improve and restore its status and place in our culture and history," the Lok Sabha MP from Amritsar said.
Singh also welcomed the Central government's announcement for setting up of an AIIMS in Bathinda.
The Congress leader in a statement urged the Centre to take over the Punjab Institute of Medical Science (PIMS) at Jalandhar "which is virtually closed even after an investment of about Rs 1,000 crore by the Punjab government".
Singh said Amritsar holds a special place in history, heritage and culture and with the HRIDAY scheme the city could get the facelift it deserves.
