Amid the ongoing farmers' agitation, a 45-year-old debt-ridden farmer has allegedly committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance at Sagoniya village of the district.
Kishanlal Meena, who took the extreme step last evening, was worried about his three marriageable daughters and spiralling debt, police said today.
"Meena, a resident of Sagoniya village under Devnagar police station, committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance," Raisen Kotwali police station in-charge Abhay Nema said.
According to police, Meena told his kin before dying that he was reeling under a debt of around Rs 17 lakh including Rs 10 lakh of a private bank and was worried about three marriageable daughters.
According to his family members, the farmer had to pay an amount of about Rs two lakh for electricity bills.
Nema said Meena was taken to the district hospital by the family members where doctors referred him to Bhopal.
But, the farmer died on his way to Bhopal and his family reached Kotwali police station in Raisen along with his body.
Devnagar police station in-charge Ramesh Raghuvanshi said the body was handed over to the family this morning after post-mortem.
"We have registered a case and further probe is on," Raghuvanshi said.
