The flood situation in Assam improved considerably today as the water receded in all the five affected districts.
In the South Salmara district, the flood water had receded completely, while several areas in the Goalpara, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur and Karbi Anglong districts were still submerged, according to a report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
A total of 37,493 people were still affected and 11,173.22 hectares of cropland inundated by the fourth wave of floods this year, the report said.
As many as 8,725 people had taken shelter at the 36 relief camps set up by the administration, it added.
The latest wave of floods had breached an embankment at the Manikpur area of Goalpara district, while several stretches of roads had been damaged by the natural calamity in Dhemaji and Goalpara districts, the report said.
According to a Central Water Commission (CWC) report, the Dhansiri and Jia Bharali rivers were flowing above the danger mark at Numaligarh in Golaghat district and in Sonitpur district respectively.
Though there were no reports of any fresh casualty, the previous wave of floods had claimed 76 lives, taking the toll in flood-related incidents in the north-eastern state this year to 160.
