In an appeal through the local Doordarshan channel, she asked the residents to segregate the garbage under soft and hard wastes at source and said the government had a plan for solid waste management and organic or soft waste can be used as food for animals.
The local administration department has asked the people and commercial establishments to segregate bio-degradable and non-degradable waste which would be collected at door steps from July 18.
Bedi said Puducherry from the times of Vedas "is spiritually gifted and has all bounties of nature. We can therefore make Puducherry better, much cleaner and more beautiful."
Decrying 'open air defecation', she said people should use community toilets or construct their own toilets wherever they had place either in rural areas or in urban pockets.
