Kerala government will conduct a probe into the allegation that beedi tycoon Mohammed Nisham, convicted for ramming his luxury Hummer and killing a security guard, was using mobile phone inside Kannur prison, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told the state Assembly today.
Replying to a submission raised by Congress leader Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan in this regard, Vijayan said the allegation was 'serious' and the government would examine it. Radhakrishnan alleged that Nisham, recently in news for threatening his brothers via phone, was using mobile phone freely inside the jail premises and the latest example of this was his conversation with a TV reporter last month, which was aired by the regional channel later. "It was a serious allegation that Nisham had talked to the mediaperson through mobile phone. Necessary steps will be taken to look into the allegation. The government will not extend any undue favours to him," the Chief Minister said. Referring to the recent complaint about Nisham's threatening calls to his brothers, Vijayan said the convict had not made any calls using mobile phones from the jail. The investigation had found that no security breach had happened inside the prison, he said.
He also said Nisham had used mobile phones while in transit to Bengaluru for court appearance on October 20.
Three policemen who had accompanied him, had been suspended in this regard, he added.
Nisham is serving a 24-year sentence handed down by the trial court in the case.
