The BJP on Tuesday took potshots at the Congress when one of its top leaders paid tribute on social media to Mahatma Gandhi using the word "punyatithi" or death anniversary, instead of birth anniversary.

The post on the twitter handle of AICC in-charge for Bihar Shaktisinh Gohil was, however, edited soon, "punyatithi" replaced with "Jayanti" meaning birth anniversary.

Congress leaders on condition of anonymity said it was an error caused by an oversight and later rectified.

The BJP, however, shared screenshots of the original tweet on social media and claimed Congress leaders cannot remember birthdays of anyone except members of the Nehru-Gandhi family.

"The problem with Gohil and all other leaders of the Congress is that they remember the birthdays of all members of the Nehru-Gandhi family but they have forgotten the birth or death anniversaries of all other great personalities of the nation," Bihar BJP spokesperson Nikhil Anand said.

"Gohil belongs to Guajarat, where Mahatma Gandhi was born. Still he has confusion about dates relating to his life. Deletion of the tweet would not hide the mistake. Congress people ought to rise above their ritualistic, superficial politics," he said.
