To stamp out militancy in Jammu and Kashmir, intelligence gathering mechanism has to be enhanced and police personnel must be provided specialised training and equipment, state DGP K Rajendra Kumar said.
Chairing a review meeting here last evening, he said, "There is a need to lay more focus on enhancing intelligence gathering mechanism. Militancy has made Jammu and Kashmir Police adopt new technologies and techniques to bring the force on par with the best police forces in the country."
In view of new challenges faced by state police, the focus is to train the personnel in modern law and order management, the DGP said, adding they are also focussing on upgrading all equipment including anti-riot vehicles and security gadgets.
The meeting was convened to review the pace of progress in police modernisation and discuss the proposal for acquiring equipment, to assist in providing security and maintaining law and order, under Prime Minister's special package for the state.
Under the modernisation programme, the state police is improving its capabilities and infrastructure to counter insurgency and threats to law and order, Kumar said.
Major emphasis in being given to procure the latest technology and communication system for security purposes and dedicated efforts are being made in the areas of office automation and enhancing infrastructure abilities, he said.
Procuring surveillance gadgets and technologies to improve investigation of cyber and other heinous crimes has become essential for the organisation, Kumar said.
"CCTV cameras have enabled police to both prevent and detect crimes in the major cities and towns," he said, adding, all towns and roads will come under effective surveillance through these cameras.
Bomb detection and disposal squads and X-Ray scanners at vital installation are to be upgraded, besides equipping field units for maximum efficiency, he said.
