Six students, aged between 15 to 17, from Songpan County were swimming in a pond yesterday when they experienced difficulty.
Three of their classmates managed to pull one of the students safely to shore while five others drowned, the official said.
The police were called on scene, said an official with the county's emergency response office.
The class was on a camping trip.
