"You should remain vigilant in the run up to the elections, during the election period and on 16th May, the day the election results are announced. Avoid political rallies and large crowds and monitor the national and local media," says the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) travel advisory for India.
The advisory, which is regularly updated, highlighted that over 800,000 British nationals visit India every year and most visits are trouble-free.
A number of tourists from across Europe have chosen the April-May period this year for what is being described as "election tourism" to get an insider's perspective as the world's largest democracy votes.
These figures will also include a number of Indian-origin British nationals who have joined the election campaign on the ground.
Some of the FCO's statutory advice on regions such as Kashmir and Manipur remains unchanged as Britons are advised against all travel to these areas.
