A non-lethal weapon, which was snatched away by smugglers from a jawan in Sipahijala district, was returned Saturday following a commander level flag meeting by BSF and its Bangladesh counterpart -- Border Guards Bangladesh.

The BSF said that two of its jawans on duty challenged a group of smugglers when they were trying to cross the Indo-Bangla international border with cattle on Friday.

Since the smugglers did not pay heed, one of the jawans fired a round from his Pump Action Gun (PAG) and simultaneously lobbed a stun grenade towards the miscreants to stop them, BSF DIG Mrityunjoy told PTI.

"Meanwhile, BSF Constable Natwar was encircled by Indian and Bangladeshi groups of smugglers, who overpowered and injured him before snatching his loaded PAG and escaped towards Bangladesh," he added.

BSF immediately approached the Border Guards Bangladesh authorities and Company and Battalion Commander level meetings were held on Saturday following which the snatched rifle was returned, he said.

When contacted, Superintendent of Police, Sipahijala, Kulwant said the situation is normal in the area and police were keeping a close watch on the situation.
