The Border Security Force (BSF) personnel have recovered 250 kg of Hilsa fish, worth Rs 2.5 lakh from Ashabari, a village near the Indo-Bangla border in Sipahijala district, about 50 km from here, a senior official said today.
Acting on a tip-off, a contingent of BSF led by company commander Dharmendra Singh raided the village on Saturday night and found that a group of smugglers were loading fish in a small truck, BSF DIG, B S Rawat said.
The smugglers attacked the BSF troop and tried to snatch the pistol of the company commander when they were challenged.
In the ensuing scuffle, a jawan identified as R G Basak sustained bullet injuries in his right thigh when one round was accidentally fired, Rawat told PTI.
The jawan was rushed to the government hospital here, where his condition was stated to be out of danger.
