Six days after being kidnapped, a coal businessman was today released by activists, believed to be from Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA).
Naga M Sangma, also the brother of Samuel M Sangma, an MLA representing Baghmara constituency in South Garo Hills, was released on a 'kutcha' road near Gasuapara.
Naga, a coal trader and also involved in export business, had been abducted by four heavily armed men six days back.
"We were informed that Naga had reached home early today after the militant released him. He is safe," Western Range Inspector General of Police H Nongpluh told PTI.
He said police were trying to find out if the family members made any monetary arrangements for his release.
Four heavily armed cadre of the GNLA went to his house in Gasuapara on the evening of January 30 and abducted him.
Family members told the police they did not receive any demand for ransom from any militant organisation.
"We did not receive any demand and we have not paid any money to anyone," a family member said.
They claimed the armed men released Naga unconditionally.
