Former Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh today said candidates with criminal records should be barred from contesting student elections.
Lyngdoh, who was addressing students and faculty members of Punjab University here, said," There was an urgent need for conducting elections for representation in student bodies and candidates should not have any criminal record."
The former CEO is the chairperson of the Lyngdoh Committee, which was constituted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development as per the direction of the Supreme Court to frame guidelines on students union elections in colleges and universities.
He said the Committee had recommended frequency of elections, eligibility criteria and duration of campaign period.
It had also recommended a grievances redressal mechanism to adjudicate disputes arising out of students' elections, Lyngdoh added.
