One Lobh Singh, a resident of Begumpur, was on his way when three man sought lift from him and he obliged.
"As they got in, one of them pulled out a pistol and asked him to leave the car. As Singh resisted, one of them fired at him. The bullet, however accidentally hit their associate Satish in his head," said a police officer.
Sensing an opportunity, Satish fled from the car while the robbers drove away, he said.
When police reached the spot, they found Satish dead.
Meanwhile, Singh informed the police about the incident.
"When police checked Satish's background, they realised that he was involved in several criminal cases in the past," the officer said .
A case of murder has been registered at Begumpur police station and a search for the robbers is on, police said.
