Signalling tough competition, Chinese and Taiwanese firms are ready to flood the market with low-priced smartwatches starting USD 6 which can sense a wide range of body movements and even calculate calories burnt from physical activities.
"We have a dress watch with pedometer that can sense steps walked, calories burnt...Starting at USD 6. The price is low because it has rubber band strap. With metallic, it will cost USD 11. It stores data of about seven days which can be transfered to a personal computer," Taiwan-based Utmost Technology Group President Justine Shen told PTI at consumer electronics show IFA ending September 10.
The USD 6 priced watch is like a analog watch with dial but digital displays appear on its glass when the user is in motion. The Utmost Technology smartwatch price is based on a minimum order quantity of 2,000 pieces.
In India, such smartwatches are available starting at USD 30 apiece.
China and Taiwan based firm expressed willingness to further cut prices if the order quantity is substantial.
Around a dozen of China and Taiwan based companies are selling smartwatches and bracelets. All of them are promising one-year replacement warranty.
These companies are offering water, dust and shock-proof smart bracelets containing sensors to track activities of users similar to what pedometers and sleep monitors do but for prices as low as USD 11/unit.
"The warranty date starts from the day we ship our product. In case of replacement, we bear the shipping cost involved to send the product back to distributor. Distributor will have to pay shipping cost for transporting product to our company," a sales representative of Shenzhen-based IMCO said.
These China and Taiwan based companies claimed that they have CE certification--which means that their products comply with the essential requirements of European health, safety and environmental protection legislation.
Shenzen based 8S Mobile says its smartwatch, which can be used as phone and has a camera for taking pictures, is priced at USD 41 per unit for a minimum order quantity of 500 units.
Leading brands Samsung, Sony, Garmin and others offer these features in their smartwatches equipped with motion sensors and are priced around or above USD 139 apiece.
Samsung's lowest priced band to measure or track physcial activity is available at around USD 96.
