A Class I student of a government primary school drowned in a pond located in the school premises at Karanjia in Mayurbhanj district today, police said.
The deceased boy was identified as 5-year-old Yesh Singh, son of Rahul Singh of Karanjia Notified Area Council (NAC). While playing in the school premises, he slipped and fell into the pond at Girima Primary School, they said.
The boy, who was immediately rushed to Karanjia government hospital, was declared brought dead by doctors.
The local residents staged a road blockade near the hospital demanding action against the school headmistress holding her responsible for the death of the boy.
After the Karanjia Block Education Officer (BEO) Abhiram Patra placed the headmistress of the school, Arati Mishra under suspension the blockade was lifted.
