The chief ministers have proposed the use of Aadhaar as an identifier for providing subsidies and public services, the government said today.
This was one of the proposals made for good governance during a meeting of Inter-State Council Secretariat last month, Minister of State for Home Affairs Hansraj Gangaram Ahir said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.
The agenda items discussed during the meet were improving quality of school education with focus on improving learning outcomes, incentivising better performance, and internal security with focus on intelligence sharing and coordination for combating terrorism, insurgency and police reforms.
"The chief ministers made proposals for good governance and direct benefit schemes and use of Aadhaar as an identifier for providing subsidies, benefits and public services etc. The suggestions or proposals of the chief ministers have been noted by the Inter-State Council Secretariat," Ahir said in the reply.
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) issues Aadhaar -- a 12-digit unique identification number -- which acts as a proof of identity and address, anywhere in the country.
Last week, Opposition members in the Rajya Sabha had flagged concerns over making Aadhaar card mandatory for availing benefits like subsidised LPG, PDS supplies and pensions. On July 29, Union minister Venkaiah Naidu had said that no one would be denied benefits for want of Aadhaar card.
