A delegation of Punjab Congress today met Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki and demanded immediate suspension of a Chandigarh police official, who they alleged had "barged into" Punjab Congress Bhawan and "misbehaved with party workers and journalists" there.
Police had yesterday lathicharged members of the Kisan wing of Punjab Congress when they tried to break the barricade and marched to gherao the official residence of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal here protesting non-payment to farmers for wheat procurement.
Punjab Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader Charanjit Singh Channi had alleged that police "ran after the protesters and barged into" Congress Bhawan here and started "searching" every room of the party office.
"The police officials also misbehaved with the office staff and journalists. A formal complaint has been lodged against police officer Narinder Patial to relevant authorities," he had said.
Today, a party delegation led by Channi and comprising MLA Balbir Singh Sidhu, Kisan Wing chairman Inderjeet Zira, Sandeep Sandhu and Kamal Saini met the Governor and Union Territory Administrator Kaptan Singh Solanki and brought to his attention how the police official had allegedly "run amok inside the party office".
"The Governor gave a patient hearing to the delegation and assured that strict action will be taken against the policeman," Channi said.
The delegation also brought to the Governor's notice that the security of the Congress Bhawan is taken care of by Punjab Police and the Chandigarh Police official "had no business to barge into the premises", he said.
In a separate memorandum to Solanki, Congress urged him to ensure that after the state government got the Cash Credit Limit for wheat from the Centre, the farmers get their payment on time, the CLP leader said.
Channi also alleged that it was "the usual habit and the practice of the Akalis to divert the money meant for the farmers on other things leaving the farmers in the lurch.
