The Vigilance department of Delhi police today claimed to have arrested a constable for allegedly demanding and accepting bribe for releasing a detainee, who was taken into custody last month.
According to police, the arrested constable, identified as Naresh Kumar, was posted at Mayur Vihar police station.
Police said the complainant is a friend of the detainee, who was taken into custody on May 17. When he went to enquire about his friend's detention, the complainant was asked to pay a bribe of Rs 20,000 by the constable Kumar.
"After negotiating, Kumar finally fixed an amount of Rs 7,000. Subsequently, the complainant gave Rs 5,000 on the same day and the rest of the amount was to be handed over to Kumar on next day," said a senior police official.
The complainant then filed a complaint against Kumar with the Vigilance unit of Delhi Police, the official said.
"The complaint was filed on the basis of the recording, which the complainant had recorded in his phone while talking with Kumar for the remaining amount of money which should be paid to him.
"After verifying the credentials of the recorded conversation between the complainant and Kumar, the vigilance officials arrested the accused constable," the official said, adding, an FIR was registered and further investigation is on.
