Rajasthan Police today claimed to have made a breakthrough into last year's robberies at two gold loan firms in the city, with the arrest of six accused from different parts of the country in the past few days.
The inter-state gang, led by Sanjay Bijarniya (34), had carried out the robberies - at IIFL Gold Loan office on November 9 and at Manappuram Gold Loan branch on February 6, 2013 -- in the city's Vidhyadhar Nagar area, Jaipur Police Commissioner Sriniwas Rao Junga said at a press conference.
The gang members looted 30 kgs of gold and Rs 9 crore in cash from the IIFL unit, and 5.5 kgs of gold and Rs 3 lakh in cash from Manappuram Gold Loan branch, he said.
Kingpin Sanjay and one of his aides, Kamlesh Kumar Khurra (28), were arrested from a movie theatre in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut yesterday, the police commissioner said.
Sanjay, an engineer, was working at the Delhi airport as a screen coordinator before he formed the gang. His two other accomplices - Subhash (28) and Vijay Meena (27) - were nabbed from Rajasthan's Sikar district yesterday, he said.
Two goldsmiths - Manoj Soni (35) and his father-in-law Kamal Kant who disposed and sold off the gold -- were arrested two days ago from Bangalore, the police officer said.
Police have so far recovered 2 kgs of gold, Rs 35.20 lakh in cash, a Mahindra Scorpio SUV, two motorcycles, three arms and 31 live cartridges from their possession.
The accused have confessed to the crime, he claimed, and added that cases under Section 395 (dacoity) of the IPC have been registered against them.
