CPI(M) today demanded that Railways withdraw its order stopping on the spot issue of sleeper tickets for long distance trains in reserved coaches and urged Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to immediately take up with the Railways the hardships faced by commuters .
Party State Secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan told reporters here that this step by Railways had led to hardships for the passengers.
He demanded that the Chief Minister immediately intervene on the matter and alleged that it was an 'open challenge' by the Railway towards commuters.
CPI(M) veteran and Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan requested the Railways to reconsider the decision and withdraw the order.
As per the directive of Railway Board, booking counters have stopped issuing sleeper tickets to those wishing to travel without reservation on trains.
Only ordinary tickets will henceforth be issued.
Earlier, passengers were issued sleeper class tickets in long distance trains to travel during daytime.
