: CPI(M) today charged the Puducherry government with tacitly encouraging private educational institutions without initiating steps to rein in the managements on various issues.
The party's Puducherry unit secretary R Rajangam said in a release that lack of steps to implement the Right to Education Act was denying poor children opportunities to pursue education. The Act, if implemented, would ensure availability of 25 per cent of seats in private schools for children of poor families.
He also said vacancies in teachers posts in government schools continued, leading to the decline in pass percentage in public exams. Stationery, uniform and other academic material should be distributed on the opening day of schools after the vacation.
Government has postponed the date of reopening of schools to June 12 citing continuation of summer heat.
He said many schools housed in old and palatial buildings were unable to get alternative accomodation to run classes as the buildings were weak and needed renovation.
Rajangam said CPI(M) would stage a demonstration at the Directorate of School Education on June 8 to bring to focus the various hardships students of government schools were facing.
