The CPI(M) today alleged that a procession, led by the party's state secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra, was attacked at Narma village in West Midnapore district by Trinamool Congress supporters.
The Trinamool Congress, however, denied the allegation and claimed that it was an intra-party affair.
The CPI(M) alleged that the procession was stopped and attacked by TMC workers at Narma village under Narayangarh police station on way to Madan Mohan Chowk, 50 km from Midnapore town.
The police said that as the TMC workers stopped the procession at Bakitaki village, some distance away from the destination, the processionists called for its help.
After the arrival of the police on the scene, it was mutually agreed to terminate the procession at the village, sources said.
CPI(M) politburo member and Left Front chairman Biman Bose said that the administration had been informed of the party programme before hand, but yet the procession was attacked.
"Such incidents had happened elsewhere in the state earlier," Bose alleged.
Mishra, also the state Opposition leader, said, "We will be on the street to voice our protest. None can stop us. Democracy in the state is in peril. People should wake up and resist."
Denying the allegation, TMC leader and minister Jyotipriya Mullick said, "Why should we attack those who have lost? Let the CPI(M) inquire into it. Those who are against Surjya Kanta Mishra in the party may be behind the incident. The administration will look into it," he said.
