A police team was formed on the directive of Senior Superintendent of Police Amol V Homkar following an information that notorious criminal, Santosh Rai alias Bhagna, was planning to kidnap a businessman to extract Rs five crore ransom on the directive of one Sajjad, who was lodged in Ghaghidih jail here.
The police team conducted raid and arrested Bhagna when he was on his way to meet a gang leader, Chouda Raju to make adequate arrangement including hiring the appropriate person to execute the plan, said Superintendent of Police (city) Karthik S.
A loaded pistol and a live cartridge was recovered from his possession, the SP said..
Referring the criminal antecedent of Bhagna, the SP said he had kidnapped two businessmen in Kolkata and released them on payment of ransom.
In an another incident, he had abducted and shot dead a Odisha's Barbil-based businessman dealing in iron-ore and his driver in 2007.
Further investigation was on, the SP added.
