Vehicular traffic was thrown out of gear as arterial roads leading to Connaught Place were choked here this evening with people from all walks of life converging at the Central Park where the entire Delhi Cabinet met to highlight its achievements before the public.
As people tried to reach the venue in their vehicles, gridlock was seen on several key roads during the evening rush hour.
Given the limited parking capacity in the area, people had to walk long distances to reach the venue and a lot of people had to watch the event on giant screens erected outside the venue as the Central Park was filled to the capacity.
Delhi Traffic Police had deployed additional manpower to control traffic at inner and outer circle but traffic diversions on various routes leading to the venue caused a cascading effect on various adjoining roads which witnessed heavy traffic inflow.
Motorists who wanted to got toward west Delhi from ITO and Mandi House were diverted through India Gate-Ashoka Road route while those going toward east Delhi from Karol Bagh had to take Desh Bandhu Gupta Road or Rani Jhansi road.
The detour caused bumper-to-bumper traffic at Asaf Ali Road and Ring Road which sees heavy traffic even on normal days.
As CP's Outer circle remained out of bounds for nearly three hours in the evening, stretches around India Gate, Ajmeri Gate and Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg witnessed heavy traffic.
Traffic situation could be normalized only around 9 PM in central Delhi.
