The Delhi government is contemplating moving the Supreme Court seeking clarification on giving 'no objection certificate' for diesel vehicles which are more than 10-years-old.
A senior government official said that the apex court had in January asked the transport department to give NOC to owners so that they can sell their vehicles aged more than 10 years outside Delhi-NCR.
The official said that the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has now directed deregistration of such vehicles, which has created confusion and the transport department will now seek clarification on this.
In the last six months, 25000 car owners have taken NOC from the department.
"The department will request the SC to clarify it so that it can continue giving NOC. Also, the department will put a deadline till when NOC can be taken from its regional offices," the official said.
The transport department has identified 2.82 lakh vehicles which are 10-years-old. An analysis conducted by the department has revealed that Delhi has 1.6 lakh private and 1.2 lakh commercial diesel vehicles which are over 10 years old.
He also said that after seeking clarification, the transport department will start deregistering the vehicles.
"The transport department has the addresses but sending notices will take time. The department will share details with the traffic police," the official said.
