Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today called on Congress president Sonia Gandhi and is believed to have apprised her about preparation of the city government to roll out the ambitious food security programme on August 20, the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
Sources said implementation of the scheme in Delhi figured in the meeting.
Dikshit is also understood to have briefed Gandhi about party's preparation for the assembly polls in Delhi which is slated for November.
The Chief Minister had already informed Union Food Minister K V Thomas that Delhi will be the first state in the country to roll out the food security scheme.
Earlier in the day, Dikshit issued directions to departments and agencies concerned to make all necessary preparations for rolling out the scheme in the city on August 20.
President Pranab Mukherjee had signed the Ordinance on food security programme on Friday that will give the nation's three-fourth population the right to get 5 kg of foodgrains every month at highly subsidised rates of Rs 1-3 per kg.
Per kg of rice will be supplied at Rs 3 while wheat and coarse cereals will be given at Rs 2 and Rs 1 per kg respectively under the programme.
