Doordarshan communicating developmental agenda of Govt: Naidu

Union Information and Broadcasting minister M Venkaiah Naidu today said that while other broadcasters work for commercial purposes, public broadcaster Doordarshan has been communicating the developmental agenda of the government.
Speaking at the 57th Foundation Day of Doordarshan, Naidu said that he has been advising broadcasters to stay nearer to truth while avoiding sensationalism.
He said there is competition and others broadcasters work for commercial purpose, but Doordarshan communicates the developmental agenda of the country.
He said information is important for empowerment.
Naidu also said that Doordarshan is the most credible news communicator in the country and upholds the family values, culture, tradition of India while keeping aside vulgarity, obscenity and violence.
Epics like Mahabharat and Ramayana were brought to the people by Doordarshan. He also said that it reaches the remotest corners of the country.
Prasar Bharati Chairperson A Surya Prakash said that Doordarshan which started with a few hours of programming now has 23 channels and millions of viewers.
He also said that for Prasar Bharati and Doordarshan, the primary responsibility is to work in national interest.
Citing an instance, he said that the country has become polio free, for which the awareness campaign of Doordarshan and AIR have played a key role.
