Activists of various city-based organisations today demanded prosecution of P A Inamdar, president of a society that runs Abeda Inamdar college, for "negligence" in the wake of drowning of its 14 students off Murud-Janjira beach in Raigad district on Monday.
Members of various organisations, under the aegis of 'Shikshan Hakka Manch', sat on a hunger strike outside the college campus in Camp area here.
"Our basic demand is that the institute should declare the aid of Rs 50 lakh to the kin of the deceased students and that Inamdar should be prosecuted for negligence and his rude behaviour towards parents and relatives (of the students)," said Matin Mujawar, president of 'Shikshan Hakka Manch'.
The college is run by the Maharashtra Cosmopolitan Education Society.
When contacted, a trustee of Society said a panel has been set up to investigate the matter.
"We have already expressed our commitment to support the bereaved families and if the kin of the deceased students come to us, we will talk to them. We do not recognise these people (on strike) who claim to be speaking on behalf of the parents and relatives," said Abeda Inamdar.
A total of 14 students, including 10 girls, drowned after they entered the sea for a swim.
The students, aged between 18 and 20, were pursuing BSC and BCA computer courses.
