Elephant dies after falling into pit

A 10-year-old male elephant died after it fell into a 50-foot pit in Burgur forest in the district, police said today.
Forest officials noticed the carcass of the pachyderm deep in the forest yesterday afternoon. A veterinary doctor was summoned who confirmed that the elephant had died of severe injuries after falling into the pit.
The carcass was later removed and buried at a nearby spot, police said.
