The White House has said that Beijing is using its political and economic influence to rein in North Korea, attributing the efforts to "recently developed" ties between US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.
"It is encouraging to see China continue to move forward and join us in this effort to control North Korea," White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer told reporters yesterday.
The recently-developed relationship between the US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping is clearly showing some positive signs, he said.
"China continues to have both economic and political influence over North Korea. It is important to see them heading in this direction. It is a very positive sign to see them play a larger role. It is in everybody's interest to contain North Korea's actions," Spicer said.
The press secretary said it was too early to say the extent of the action China was taking. He said a unified effort to contain North Korea's threat is a positive step to protect not only US security interests but also those in the region.
