Expressway robbers' gang busted, 2 held

Police today claimed to have busted a gang of robbers who targeted vehicles on Yamuna Expressway with the arrest of its two members and recovery of firearms and iron axles.
A joint team of Jewar Police and Anti-Extortion Cell last night found four men throwing iron axles on passing vehicles at Dayanatpur underpass here, SP (Rural) Sujata Singh said.
When the team challenged them, the four men opened fire on the police party and tried to escape from the spot, she said, adding while the team caught two accused, as many others managed to escape.
The arrested accused were identified as Rameshwar and his brother Satte, both residents of Israel Mohalla in Jewar, the SP said, adding the accused told police that the two of their accomplices who escaped are Manoj and Jeewan, both hail from West Bengal.
Two country-made pistol, five live cartridges, three iron axles, Rs 19,500 in cash and some other jewellery was recovered from them, she said.
The brothers duo told police that they work as labourer at construction sites and in night they used to commit robberies on the Expressway.
The robbers used to throw axle on passing cars on the Expressway. If the driver stopped the car to check what hit the vehicle, all the four accused used to overpower the driver and other occupants and rob them, Singh said.
They used to sell jewellery to a Jeweller in Jewar but police found his shop locked and the jeweller was absconding, the SP added.
