A police officer said, the groups indulged in brickbatting following an argument over students' union issue injuring some.
But none of the injured students had to be hospitalised, he added.
Some of the students present claimed the clash was between two factions of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) unit in the institute - headed by the former General Secretary and the present incumbent.
The students and locals also alleged bombs were hurled at the clash with outsiders joining the clashing groups but this was not confirmed by the police.
The institute authorities refused to comment.
