First-ever Pak team of mountaineers scale K-2 summit

A six-member team from Pakistan today became the first group from the country to successfully scale K-2, the second highest peak in the world, located in the northern Himalayan region.
"Yes, it is true that Pakistani team has conquered the second highest peak," Karare Haidri of Pakistan Alpine Club told PTI.
The climbers made it to the summit at 2.25 am. The expedition organised by an Italian NGO started their journey on June 14 from the base camp.
The expedition - called K-2 60 Years Later - included six Pakistanis: Hassan Jan, Ali Durani, Rahmat Ullah Baig, Ghulam Mehdi, Ali and Muhammad Sadiq. Three Italians were also part of the group.

Individuals from Pakistan had scaled the peak but it is for the first time that a team from Pakistan climbed K-2.
The K-2 peak near China's border is the second tallest peak after Everest, having a height of 8,611 metres.
The mountain was scaled for the first time by three Italians - Achille Compagnoni, Lino Lacedelli and Ardito Desio on July 31, 1954 and the current expedition was organised to mark the 60th anniversary of the first successful ascent.
