The incident occurred on Friday evening near Karmadiha village under the limits of Basantpur police station, Superintendent of Police, Balrampur, G S Darro said.
According to police, the driver of the pick up vehicle was allegedly drunk. When the vehicle came near Karmadiha village, the driver lost control and it rammed into an electricity pole. Due to the impact, the vehicle turned turtle.
One of the passengers died on the spot, while four others succumbed to their injuries at a hospital. They were going to attend a marriage ceremony, Darro said.
Driver of the vehicle fled from the spot after the accident and efforts are on to nab him, police said.
