According to sources, the search-cum-selection committee has selected Kaushal, who retired as member (technology), DoT in June this year, for the post of TRAI member.
This post would be falling vacant upon completion of the three-year tenure of RK Arnold in January next year.
"The committee has shortlisted 11 candidates, which were interviewed on November 15. After the meeting, Kaushal has emerged the top choice for the post," sources in DoT said.
The shortlisted candidates also included TRAI secretary Sudhir Gupta, former DoT officials AK Mittal and JK Roy, among others.
The committee recommendations will now be placed before Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad for approval. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) will give the final approval.
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) consists of a chairperson and not more than two whole-time members and two part-time members appointed by the Central government.
