Designer Gaurang stepped into the fashion world four years ago and now with his Spring/Summer 2016 collection, which was today showcased at the ongoing Lakme Fashion Week, he plans to conquer the London as well as Milan runway.
Titled "Calico", the collection rekindles the reminiscence of 11th century colours, motifs and weaves, and the designer says he will share the creations at the international shows soon.
"Next year, I am planning to go to London and Paris with 'Calico'. We have started preparing for submissions and are planning to go there in February. After LFW, I will send the pictures of my creations there," Gaurang told PTI.
"I am settled in India with eight stores. I am known for my sarees, ghagra and anarkalis so, I wanted a new type of client. I also need a new kick for me," he added.
Known for his lehengas and sarees, the designer came out of his comfort zone and tried his hands at gowns and other evening wears, keeping the essence of Jamdani alive.
"It was like a new me. I started working on this in December. It was trial-and-error. The gowns are approximately made of 28 meters of fabric. It was a bit difficult task," he said.
"Calico" emphasises on the rich and vibrant history of Indian craftsmanship and is a contemporary interpretation of the 'Tree of Life' motifs.
In the collection, Gaurang has paid reverence to the aesthetics of early 20th century Indian royalty.
The collection of 40 ensembles, including 16 sarees, was crafted from hand-woven textiles in Khadi, Uppada and Kota using the Jamdani technique.
The sarees were draped in royal styles of 12 states and the gowns followed the silhouettes of the Belle Epoch period.
