The commander of US Army forces in Europe says the United States is considering a plan to train Ukrainian army soldiers beginning in late November.
In remarks to reporters at the Pentagon, Lt General Ben Hodges says the training would be an extension of current US training of Ukrainian national guardsmen, who operate under the Ministry of the Interior and are not front-line combat forces.
He says there are approximately 305 US troops currently involved.
Hodges provided few details of the plan, but indicated a US decision would have to come soon to meet the November start date.
The US has provided non-lethal aid to Ukraine, but not lethal arms, in its struggle against Russian-backed separatists.
