Warner Bros had originally dated the film for October 21 release.
The sci-fi adventure film, starring 45-year-old Butler, marks the directorial debut of veteran writer-producer Dean Devlin, who teamed with Roland Emmerich to produce 1996's "Independence Day", said The Hollywood Reporter.
Written by Devlin, "Geostorm" follows a satellite designer (Butler) who heads into space to prevent climate-controlling satellites from creating a man-made storm of epic proportions when he and his estranged brother learn of a plot to assassinate the president.
The January 13-16 holiday weekend already has four films releasing, "Boss Baby", "The Dark Tower", "The Magnificent Seven and "Power Rangers".
