Germany lends support to Meghalaya to preserve environment

Meghalaya's effort to preserve its fragile environment seems to have paid off with the German Development Corporation assuring support to the state government's initiative to begin climate change technological interventions and programmes.
A German delegation led by Uta Bollhoff, Director General, Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) met Chief Minister Mukul Sangma today and assured the state government of the latest technological intervention for preservation of the environment, official sources said.
The BMZ have expressed their desire in assisting Meghalaya in preparation of State Action Plan on Climate Change (SAPCC), Missions on Climate and Value Change, effective water management, Draft report on State Water Policy, greening of the Silk Value Chain, and knowledge centre for Natural Resource Management and Climate Change.
Bollhoff, the leader of the delegation stated that there are emerging opportunities under the Climate Change Adaptation Programme in NER as they had a good dialogue with the Centre, the Ministry of DONER and other Central ministries.
She also expressed happiness over the work under the GIZ project in Meghalaya.
During the course of the discussion several issues such as Water Policy, Integrated Knowledge Management, Capacity Building, Vulnerable Areas affecting Climate Change, Eco-tourism, degradation of land through quarrying and renewable energy which can drive the socio - economic needs of the people was highlighted.
The delegation also met senior officers of the state government during which several issues were discussed to find out key areas where the state government can work together with Germany.
