Four girls of Chandanwara village went to neighbouring Lalwakia village to bathe in the river and accidently slipped into the deep waters, Dhaka police station officer in-charge Bhagirath Prasad said.
On hearing their cries for help, locals jumped into the river and rescued a nine year-old.
The body of another girl was also fished out.
Prasad said search is on for the other two girls and it was being feared that they too may have drowned.
Dhaka Circle Officer (CO) Sanjeev Kumar Sadal is camping on the spot to supervise the rescue operation.
