BJP leader Maheish Girri, who won the East Delhi Lok Sabha seat by close to two lakh votes, gave the credit of his victory to his party and Narendra Modi and vowed to work for the betterment of the people of his constituency.
"I will go to party office from here and celebrate with the party workers. I want to thank people of East Delhi for the victory. I want to tell people of my constituency that I will work for their betterment," Girri told reporters outside the counting centre.
"You cannot separate a mother from her son. A mother's win is her son's win and vice-versa. BJP is like our mother, we have grown up playing in her lap...And Modi Ji is the face of our party. So this win is for both Modi Ji and BJP. Modi is our engine...We are just following him," he said when asked about whether a Modi-wave steered him to victory.
Girri, who was associated with the Art of Living, polled 5,72,202 votes.
AAP leader Rajmohan Gandhi, who got 3,81,739 votes, to finish second said he had not expected BJP to perform so well.
"I had not expected BJP to perform this well. I think it is both anti-incumbency and Modi-wave which have worked this time," he said.
Talking about AAP's future course of action, Gandhi said the party is committed to the goals of honesty and transparency.
"AAP will continue to fight for honesty, transparency and progress. We will demand honesty and transparency from the new government," he said.
Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit who secured a little over 2 lakh votes attributed anti-incumbency as a factor to his party's defeat.
"There is anti-incumbency. Modi has been able to get all the anti-Congress votes. He did not let anti-Congress votes to scatter. Congress is fully prepared to sit in the opposition benches," he said.
