The CID today said that it has some leads on the whereabouts of the missing Uttarbanga Sambad journalist and rubbished the news of finding the scribe at a Guwahati hotel as "rumours".
"We are still in search of him (the journalist). We have got some leads regarding his whereabouts. Our officials are working on them," a senior CID official said today.
Chayan Sarkar, a reporter at Bengali daily Uttarbanga Sangbad, has been missing since 9 AM on Sunday after eight persons, named by him in an FIR for issuing threats for writing a college admission bribery story, were arrested.
Sarkar's notebook, scooter and purse were found lying in a place, police sources had said.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had ordered a CID probe into the incident and a team of 35 CID personnel visited the spot near Sarkar's home at Alipurduar town from where he went missing.
The CID official rubbished news of "finding" Sarkar at a Guwahati hotel as "rumours".
"All these are rumours. He can be anywhere... We are searching him," he said.
Meanwhile, describing Sarkar's "missing" as a matter of "grave concern", the Indian Journalists' Association (IJA) today demanded the police to ensure a "safe return" of the journalist.
"This is a matter of grave concern that Chayan Sarkar, a reporter of Uttarbanga Sambad at Alipurduar, is mysteriously missing since August 2. IJA demands that the police ensure his safe return," IJA president S Sabanayakan and general secretary Sekhar Sengupta said in the statement issued by the IJA today.
