Gujarat Congress has decided to launch a non-governmental organisation (NGO) to address several issues affecting people and make them a part of party's movements which are not political, it was announced here today.
Senior Congress leader and former MP Jagdish Thakor announced this during a press conference here.
Tomorrow, Congress would officially launch the organisation to address several issues affecting people.
"The name of the organisation will be announced at a function to be held in Tagore Hall tomorrow," Thakor said.
Besides Congress leaders and party workers, prominent citizens and representatives of NGOs would also attend the launch.
"We want to provide an NGO-like platform to voice the concerns of the common man, who is being neglected by this government. To become a part of our movement, which is not political, we have invited 10 to 12 NGOs for the launch ceremony," Thakor said.
Gujarat state Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi said that the Congress-backed organisation would be handled like an independent NGO rather than a sister concern of the party.
"Usually, it is observed that when a political party takes up an issue related to anti-people government policy, people see it as just another political issue, even though it affects them equally. Thus, we have decided to provide a platform which is totally non-political to involve more people and make it a public movement," Doshi said.
"Though the Congress supports this organisation, it will work as an independent entity, like an NGO, which will raise issues with the support of common men. As per my knowledge, the Gujarat Congress is first in the country to launch such an initiative," Doshi said.
