A 47-year old police head constable allegedly committed suicide in his residence near here.
Vidyalingam, attached to Omakur police station, was addicted to alcohol and used to beat his wife and children. Unable to put up with the harassment, his wife, son and daughter had left for Tiruchirappalli some 20 days ago, police said.
As his house door remained locked today, neighbours peeped in through the window and saw him hanging from the ceiling of a room, they said.
Police said the head constable had been absent from duty for some time.
