The unidentified miscreants, who had dug up the eight- feet deep and 1.5-feet wide tunnel, fled from the spot after the alarm at the public sector bank set off last night.
The alarm alerted the bank officials who then called up the police. The tunnel was dug from an abandoned building situated at the bank branch's backside, police said.
"The robbers made a failed attempt to rob the bank. Preliminary investigations suggest that it could be the handiwork of more than two persons who had conducted recce well in advance. They were well-prepared to carry out the crime," Hisar IGP A K Rao said, adding, the police was studying the CCTV footage procured from the bank.
The robbery attempt at Bhiwani was a reminder of the sensational bank robbery in Sonepat last year wherein miscreants had dug an over 125-feet long tunnel and cleaned up several lockers.
